Frequently asked questions

The Institutes of Applied Technology are a collaboration between TAFE NSW, industry, universities and supported by the Department of Education.

There are two Institutes:

·       Institute of Applied Technology Digital at Meadowbank

·       Institute of Applied Technology Construction at Kingswood/Nepean

The Institute of Applied Technology Digital (IATD) is a technology focused institute at TAFE NSW Meadowbank. Working in collaboration with TAFE NSW, Microsoft, Macquarie University, and the University of Technology Sydney, the Institute of Applied Technology Digital designs and delivers market leading training that rapidly adapts to industry needs.

The Institute of Applied Technology Construction (IATC) is focused on future innovations and leadership in Construction and will be located at TAFE NSW Nepean (Kingswood) from early 2024. Working in collaboration with TAFE NSW, Western Sydney University, and CPB Contractors, the Institute of Applied Technology Construction designs and delivers market-leading training that rapidly adapts to industry needs.

At the Institute of Applied Technology, you can study a range of Microskills and Microcredentials to develop industry-recognised skills that address your workplace or career goals.

A full list of courses is here.

Microskills are bite-sized, self-directed courses designed to develop a specific skill or address a particular topic. The courses are an affordable and a fast way to sharpen your skills and knowledge with relevant, targeted training and only contain several hours of content. The volume of learning can range from 1 hours to 5 hours. Microskills are completed anytime and delivered 100% online.

Microcredentials are practical academic courses, which provide in-demand skills you can use in the workplace. Microcredentials include assessment tasks and provide a certification in industry-specific skills recognised as evidence of competence.

You can stack your courses with other Microcredentials, tailoring your learning journey to gain the skills you need to get ahead in your industry. Upon completion, your Microcredential is recorded and may give you credit toward further study pathways in the vocational and higher education sectors.

You will learn from industry experts and gain training that has been co-designed and co-delivered with industry, TAFE NSW, and university partners.

You will graduate with both practical and academic outcomes to apply directly to the workplace.

Each Microcredential description includes clear prerequisites which are required prior to study. The prerequisites required depend on the specific Microcredential.

Mastery refers to the level of a learner upon achievement of learning outcomes and completion of a Microcredential.

There are THREE levels of Mastery used in IATC Microcredential product design:

·       Foundation

·       Intermediate

·       Advanced

The levels are most indicative of:

·       Estimated total Volume of Learning (VoL)

·       AQF level of the Course that the Microcredential may, as a stacked combination of Microcredentials, be recognised as a pathway into: E.g., University recognition pathways.

Mastery levels are not an indicator of WHO should enrol into the Microcredential as this is addressed through prerequisites. E.g., a Foundation Microcredential may still have specific prerequisites such as previous education or work experience.
